Records of the steamship Planter, 1861-1862.

Records of the steamship Planter include a license, a certificate, and an account book. A license (1861) grants John Ferguson permission to conduct coastal trade out of Charleston (S.C.) for one year. A certificate of enrollment (1861) from the Confederate States of America was required under "An Act for Enrolling and Licensing Ships or Vessels to be employed in the Coasting Trade and Fisheries, and for regulating the same," and replaces the former U.S. enrollment, now surrendered (also includes the ship's specifications). An account book lists cash received from various individuals, and amounts paid out for provisions and other items. The inside front cover is inscribed: "C.J. Relyea 1862." A penciled note reads: "Found on board the steamer Planter when she was brought to the South Atlantic Squadron by Robert Small [sic]."
